Sloppy Affair

Saturday, January 31, 2015

It wasn’t pretty by any stretch of the imagination but the Pierre Lady Governor basketball team buckled down in the fourth quarter, pulled away from Brandon Valley, & defeated the Lynx 55-40. Pierre started the game on an 11-0 run only to be matched by a 6-0 Brandon Valley run later in the first quarter. Though they never led on Friday night, Brandon slowly but surely chipped away at their deficit & tied the game twice in third quarter. Pierre was able to stretch their lead back to ten at the end of the third frame & then rode the shoulders of Sydney Palmer in the fourth quarter. Palmer, who finished with a game high 19 points, scored nine of the Lady Governors final thirteen points in the fourth stanza. Brandon Valley & Pierre combined to turn the ball over on 40 different occasions Friday evening while neither team found luck from three point land. Pierre sweeps the season series against Brandon Valley as they move to 9-2 overall. The Lady Governors will look for a season sweep of the Brookings Bobcats Saturday at home with tipoff scheduled for 5:30PM at the Riggs High Gymnasium.

United Way honors Jacobson for service

Friday, January 30, 2015

Amid all of the dancing and singing Thursday, one of those valuable behind-the-scenes persons quietly was honored.

Ed Jacobson was recognized during Thursday night’s Capital Area United Way’s “Dancing With the Stars” celebration. Today is Jacobson’s final day as he retires after more than five years as the organization’s executive assistant.

Jacobson says he has long understood the importance of a United Way. Jacobson says whatever community he worked in, he always checked in with that city’s United Way organization.

It was a little more than five years ago that Jacobson joined the Capital Area United Way. He says the opportunity came at the right time just as then-executive director Gloria Hanson was beginning that job.

Being part of the United Way, Jacobson says, has given him more of an appreciation of the Pierre-Fort Pierre area and those organizations who do so much for others.

While he may be retiring, Jacobson says he won’t be going away. Jacobson says he still plans to be a United Way volunteer.
