Avera Health Named Number One South Dakota Employer By Forbes

(KCCR) — Avera Health, based in Sioux Falls, has been named the number one employer in the state in a poll done by Forbes magazine. Avera Chief Human Resources Officer Kim Jensen says they didn’t know the poll was going on…

“Actually it was a very pleasant surprise and honor. Just because we weren’t aware that this was something that was actually occurring with Forbes and their whole process so to have this is…is through an anonymous survey, an independent survey that they were worked with a research firm to…to come up with this process and…so it’s definitely a wonderful honor for Avera.”

Jensen says they believe the standing stems back to their core values…

“Hopefully it tells us that we’re on the right path, but that we continue to always, it’s really important that we listen and then let them know how much that they’re appreciated. I really believe that it really comes back to the foundation that we have our…our mission and our sponsorship through the Benedictine and Presentation sisters and I think that…that really kind of still holds true for us that…that the mission is a real important thing to our employees.”

Jensen says even though they are a large company, they do listen to their employees…

“You can be a large company, but then you can still listen to your employees and…and be there for them and I think it really also speaks to the leadership they have. The leaders are, you know, throughout the whole organization and I think it really tells us that, you know, our leaders are really working hard and striving to make sure that, you know, we are an employer of choice and that they have good interactions and that they care for their employees.”

Avera has about sixteen thousand employees, with over nine thousand in South Dakota. The other top employers on Forbes list include: South Dakota State University, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Hy-Vee and Sanford.
