(KCCR) — Five hospitals in the Avera Health System have been named a Five-Star facility by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Avera’s Saint Mary’s Hospital of Pierre is in the elite group. The Hospital Compare overall hospital rating system summarizes a number of quality measures into a system of star ratings which is easier for consumers to compare hospital facilities to one another. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services developed the scale in 2008 using information from Health Care Surveys Quality Measure and Staffing. Over 4500 health care facilities were a part of the most recent data refresh. The five Avera sites, including hospitals in Mitchell, Aberdeen, Sioux Falls and Yankton consistently exceeded national and state scores. This recognition of Avera St. Mary’s hospital comes on the heels of Avera St. Mary’s ranking eighth in the CMS Value-Based Purchasing program. The Five-Star ranking from CMS is achieved by less than nine-percent of hospitals nationwide.
