Brief Lyman County Tornado Among Many Storm Reports From Friday Afternoon Severe Weather

(KCCR) — The National Weather Service recorded a number of storm reports from severe weather that moved through central South Dakota Friday afternoon and evening. Most of the reports were rain fall totals. A brief tornado touched down in Lyman County five miles west of the Joe Creek Rec Area. Eight miles west southwest of Okaton in Jones County has some minor crop damage from ping-pong ball-sized hail. One and three-quarter inch hail was spotted near Whitlocks Bay Rec Area in Potter County. A field of sunflowers 10 miles south, southwest of Fort Pierre was shredded and damaged with some round bales of hay moved from their previous location by thunderstorm winds. Sixty mile-per-hour winds were recorded eight miles northwest of the West Bend Rec Area and two miles south of Grey Goose with pea sized hail. One inch hail fell four miles west of Westover in Jones County. The Pierre Regional Airport reported a 72 mile-per-hour wind gust and a camper was blown over on I-90 five miles west of Oacoma. The largest rainfall total from the storms was six and a half inches four miles southeast of Sutton Bay.
