Changes In The Works To Relax Restrictions On Fire Pit Use In Pierre

(KCCR) — The City of Pierre is looking to ease up on the use of recreational fires within the city. Fire Chief Ian Paul says after changes to the ordinance about a year ago, they’ve had some input from the public…

“I’ve receive some phone calls on a couple things such as location, if they have a 10 foot patio they have a hard time if they have a concrete patio or something have a hard time not being able to put a firepit there; 8 foot or something, they might be next to a non-combustible building such as a brick and mortar and this kind of steps on the toes of that a little bit.  Also with outdoor grills, we kind of…as relaxing with change the wording as the recommendation versus a mandate for the 10 foot.”
Paul says the remaining section of the ordinance will not change and provides adequate protection for residents…

“With some of the other things that we were able to put in place last year, such as having an extinguishing equipment on hand and also the bigger one is the size of the fire pit and the stuff you can actually burn it, at which prohibits which makes it makes it where you prohibit bonfires in the city limits and things of that nature.  I think with a combination of all the stuff that we’ve put in place as well, but I think a great thing and just relaxing this is going to satisfy some questions and stuff out in the community.”
The changes also add that if using a fire pit near a neighbor’s property line you should permission from the adjacent owner. Commissioner Jim Mehlhaff says it’s a good change…

“I think this is a good compromise and make it…I know the hilly terrain that we have in this community and the location of retaining walls certainly; the way it was written previously blocked people into areas where it would just would make sense to have a firepit and I think this is a good compromise, makes good recommendations and…and as you said the other a provisions in the rest of the chapter address other problem, so I don’t think that this relaxation will cause any undue risk.”
Second reading of the changes to the ordinances on fire pits will come back to the Pierre City Commission’s next meeting on April 23rd.
