City of Pierre Renews Agreement With Department Of Public Safety For Dispatch Center

(KCCR) — The City of Pierre has renewed an agreement with the South Dakota Department of Public Safety for the Central South Dakota Dispatch Center. Pierre Police Chief Jason Jones says the Joint Powers Agreement renewal has some new additions…

“Also, as part of the review we have purposely added in language to the JPA, the Joint Powers Agreement to develop a fund to prepare for any future Capital expenditures and to allow any surplus budget to be held over rather than to returned to the general fund.”
Jones says when the Center was established in 2013 it was cobbled together…

“The understanding behind that as we have projects for scene in the future of the Dispatch Center from when that consolidation happened. We took parts of the State Radio Communications. We took parts of the Pierre Police Department dispatch center and we combine them. We took some of their equipment, some of our equipment. Piecemealed them together but here we are close to five years down the road from there and we see needs ahead of us that we need to plan for, have the capital outlay for funds of purchase of those assets.”
City Commissioner Jim Mehlhaff says the Communications Center has been an example for other dispatch centers in the state…

“It’s my understanding that’s…kind of a prototype that has been repeated other parts of the state where we back each other up and certainly there have been some growing pains and they’re probably will continue to be growing pains as we address some of the issues that come up when you cooperate with as many partners as we have and I’d like to commend the staff out at the Dispatch Center for doing a great job dealing with all the various entities and folks that we have to deal with.”
The Central South Dakota Communications Center is based at the George Mickelson Criminal Justice Center and serves eight central South Dakota counties and multiple state and federal law enforcement agencies.
