This free, classroom-style course allows students to participate in multiple in-person sessions; providing the student with knowledge and skills relative to hunting and hunter safety.
All young people between the ages of 12 and 16, as well ass those who will turn 12 by Dec. 31 and who will hunt during the current year after Sep. 1, are required to successfully complete a HuntSAFE class and possess a HuntSAFE card while hunting.
Parents are encouraged to attend with their children. People wishing to brush up on their safe hunting skills or be a hunting mentor are also encourated to attend. HuntSAFE classes are sponsored by SD Game, Fish and Parks Department as well as local community sponsors.
To be eligible for certification, students must:
- be present and participate in all the required sessions.
- attend all scheduled course meetings. No absences will be accepted.
- pass a written test at the end of the course. Students are also evaluated on their skills and attitude throughout the course.
- demonstrate what they have learned about firearms safety. Most courses include a live-fire exercise, under the close supervision of the instructors.
