Coronavirus Beginning To Impact Flights From Pierre

(KCCR) — The coronavirus is starting to impact flights out of Pierre Regional Airport. Pierre City Commissioner Jamie Huizenga says United Airlines is starting to cancel some flights out of Pierre…

“It’s not run by the city in terms of their flight schedule and so they have canceled some flights you know, during the last week or so and these canceled flights are happening on a case-by-case basis.  The SkyWest crew gets notified typically about 24 hours in advance whether that flight will be taking place.  Some are, some aren’t, but with that in mind, for anyone wanting information about whether your flight will be taking place, the number for United is 1-800-864-8331.”
Huizenga says those curious about the status of their flight can contact United Airlines approximately 24 hours before the flight is scheduled to depart. He says the flight delays will impact overall yearly emplanement numbers…

“Me sitting here bragging about enplanements and how excited we are; I suspect the March enplanements are not gonna be noteworthy, probably better than last year when we had none, but it’s not…not…not anything amazing.  I know that it’s been a challenge out there for them as well.”
Huizenga did not say how many flights United Airlines, working through SkyWest Airlines has had to pull back. Last week Huizenga said United is cutting back 20-percent of its domestic flight schedule. So far this year around 2500 flyers have departed from Pierre Regional Airport. Earlier this year officials cautiously set a goal of 20-thousand passengers by the end of the year. March enplanement numbers are likely to be released in two weeks.
