Defense Holds Strong, Governors Knock off West Central

The Pierre Governor football team took down the West Central Trojans on Friday 24-14 to stay perfect after being tied at the half 7-7. It was the closest a regular season game had been at the half since 2018 when the Governors trailed to Washington in Week Eight.

The Governors gave another heavy dose of Maguire Raske to the Trojans as the scored three times on the ground as he went 28 for 157 yards. The senior has already scored seven times in two games for the Governors. Lincoln Kienholz went 9-19 for 121 yards and two interceptions. The Trojans are at 1-1 but late in the first half, after a botched punt, West Central had great field position to take the lead on the Governors for the first time since 2018. However, the defense stood tall and the Trojans were unable to take the lead.

Head Coach Steve Steele says the line was really good…

Steele says the defense bailed the offense out of tough spots…

And Steele says Yankton are a much improved team…

The Governors, at 2-0, will be in Yankton on Friday in an ESD contest. The Govs play three of the first four games on the road and four of the last five at home. Friday’s game will be on Today’s KCCR and todayskccr.com with Jon Winkler and Greg Dean on the call.
