District 24 Legislators Say Bill To Shorten Absentee Voting Window Needs Adjustment

(KCCR) — The District 24 Legislative Delegation took part in their second of four Legislative Forums Saturday at the Pierre Area Chamber building. One of the many bills and topics discussed was House Bill 1178, which would limit absentee voting. H-B 1178 would shorten the absentee voting period to 14 days from the current window of six weeks before an election. Representative Mary Duvall admits the current window is long…

“Cast your vote early and then something comes to light about a candidate and you have buyer’s remorse, so I signed on to the bill, however, I told the prime sponsor that I thought it was being shortened too much. I’m looking for something a little shorter than a six-week voting period, because we have to allow time for overseas military people to get their ballots and get them, back again.”

Duvall says county auditors have told her the bill is over reaction by the Legislature. Representative Tim Rounds agrees with Duvall that six weeks is too much and 14 days is too little…

“They want to shorten it to 14, I’d rather see maybe 30 days, but keep that six-weeks up for the mail-in ballots, especially to our armed forces who are overseas, that type of situation. It’s getting to be, I’m afraid the days going to come, where someone is going to put in a bill to allow late voting the day after the election. We have to have some personal responsibility, if you cannot get a vote cast in 30 days, there’s an issue there.”

Unlike Rounds and Duvall, Senator Jeff Monroe is not signed on as a sponsor of the legislation…

“Did you say House Bill 1178? (Monroe)” “Yes (Rounds)” “I’m not on that bill. All the Senators…(Monroe)” “Oh take the win!(Duvall)” “All the Senators on that bill are just a bunch of Communists. (Monroe)” “Who’s on the bill? (Rounds)” “Greenfield. (Monroe)” ” “Greenfield is a Communist? (Duvall)” “Sometimes… (Rounds)” “The Majority Leader? (Rounds)” “Sometimes…(Monroe)”
Duvall expects the bill to be killed or heavily amended.
