Fall Snowstorm Remains On Track To Drop A Half Foot Of Snow On Central South Dakota

(KCCR) — A fall snowstorm remains on track to impact western and central South Dakota today. James Telken at the National Weather Service says a half foot or slightly more of snow is still on the docket for central South Dakota with the system…

“Oh pretty much right now we have snow moving into the Pierre area; you’re probably seeing a little light snow already at the moment and we’re expecting a total of about six to eight inches with the system for the Pierre area and with that we do have you in a Winter Storm Warning.  It will become very windy this afternoon and it will stay windy pretty much through Saturday.”
Telken says the storm system is only prompting minor changes in the forecast…

“Right now it’s looking pretty good.  Went back with a little higher snowfall totals a little further east; you know the northeast corner of South Dakota, but as far as the Pierre area; there hasn’t really been a ton of change in that.”
For a blizzard to occur visibility must be down to a quarter mile or less or three hours or more and winds must be 35 miles an hour or greater or frequent gusts over 35. Telken says the snowstorm could produce those conditions…

“There’s a fairly good chance that will happen that that criteria will be met.  Kinda waiting to see on that at the moment, but for now we’ve got the Winter Storm Warning and if the headline needs to be upgraded, it will happen later.”
Telken says don’t expect a return to normal fall weather after the system passes…

“That’s correct, conditions are gonna be cold for a while.  We’re gonna have highs in the 30’s pretty much through the early part of next week.  They start to get to the 40’s I guess by Tuesday for the Pierre area and toward the end, by Thursday, your back into the mid-50’s; which is still about 10-degrees below average for this time of year and your lows are going to be in the 20’s as well through early next week.”
Counties in a Winter Storm Warning include Hughes, Stanley, Hyde, Sully, Potter, Jones, Dewey, Haakon, Ziebach and Jackson. A Winter Weather Advisory is now posted for Lyman, Mellette, Brule, Buffalo and Hand Counties.  The Winter Storm Warning continues through Saturday.
