For the next three days, seven games will take place in the Dakotadome in Vermillion. Today the Class 9A state championship kicks the weekend off with Canistota Freeman coming in at 10-1 on the year taking on Howard at 8-3. Canistota/Freeman knocked off undefeated number one seed Timber Lake last Friday 44-20. Howard has technically upset every team they’ve played so far on their way to the title game. Howard beat Deubrook Area in the 2 vs 3 matchup in Region 2 73-36 and then beat Warner by a final score of 8-7. Last week Howard also beat undefeated Britton-Hecla by a low score of 12-8. That game will kick off at 10:00 AM.
This afternoon around 1:00 the Class 9AA state championship will be played between Bon Homme at 10-1 against the 8-3 Kimball/White Lake. Bon Homme knocked off the top seed last week, Wolsey Wessington by a final score of 43-14 while Kimball/White Lake has powered through the number 2 and number 3 seed the last two weeks, beating Arlington 29-0 and then Garreston 42-14. Both teams are looking for their first Class 9AA state titles although White Lake won with Plankinton in 2002.
Finally, to close out the first night in the Class 11A title game, Tea Area coming in at 10-1 will take on Dell Rapids at 7-4. Tea Area, the top seed, has not allowed a point in two postseason games this year. They won 33-0 and 28-0 over the eight seed and five seed respectively. The seven seed Dell Rapids ended the three year reign of Madison as state champions in the first round of the postseason, 14-13. Then Dell Rapids knocked off Dakota Valley 25-22 in the semifinal round last Friday. Tea Area returns to the state title game for the first time since 2016 while Dell Rapids looks for their 6th championship since 2008.
