Fort Pierre City Council To Examine Change In Fireworks Use Dates For 4th of July Holiday

(KCCR) — The Fort Pierre City Council has tabled the idea of changing the dates for sale and discharge of fireworks in Fort Pierre. Finance Officer Roxanne Heezen says an individual has approached the city inquiring about a possible change…

“Fourth of July’s on a Thursday and Friday’s with the fifth this would be normally are our last day didn’t know if we would have any interest in going into the weekend I said I can bring it to Council but one thought I had was people kind of get the mess contained if we keep it the fifth but if you go into the weekend, staff time.  I guess I don’t…Leave it up to you guys if you wanna consider any changes in that.”
The Fourth of July is a Thursday this year. Fireworks sales are permitted in Fort Pierre from June 29th to July 5th. City Superintendent Vern Thorson says he’s not concerned about the mess that can be left behind by some Independence Day revelers…

“Looking at the calendar, I mean, your gonna have less of them, probably shootin in the beginning being it’s the week before.  I can see some of that would carry in to the weekend.  To me, the biggest thing is the Fire Department.  That, to me, would be the stronger decision maker if they wanted to cover that longer.”  “They get stretched awfully thin.  It’s a lot of calls in a short period of time.”
Council member David LaRoche says he’ll bring the proposal for possibly extending the window for use and purchase to fellow members of the Fort Pierre Fire Department at their meeting Thursday. Council member Larry Cronin says changing the dates would require changes to the city’s ordinances on the use and sale of fireworks…

“We can sure bring it back, but also if we’re gonna change anything, that’s an ordinance so we gotta go through the ordinance process, but we could sure bring it back and start talking about it again, yeah, but if we’re gonna change any dates, we gotta go through that whole ordinance process and change our ordinance.”
State law allows for the sale and use of fireworks from June 27th to the end of the first Sunday in July, which this year is July 7th. The City of Fort Pierre could shorten their sales and use period but it could not extend past the state statute end date. The tabling of the issue will allow for input from the Fort Pierre Fire Department and other fireworks retailers. The issue will come back to the Fort Pierre City Council during their May 6th meeting.
