Fort Pierre Fire Responds To Small Fire On Railroad Bridge Near Wendt

(KCCR) — The Fort Pierre Fire Department responded early Thursday morning to a small fire in railroad ties on a train trestle southwest of Fort Pierre. Firefighters were dispatched around 12:15 am to the location approximately 22 miles southwest of Fort Pierre. Michael Williams with Genesse and Wyoming, the parent company of the Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad says four ties on the bridge caught fire on the R-C-P and E’s mainline near Wendt in southwest Stanley County. Fort Pierre Fire Second Captain Nate McMillin says railroad officials believe the brief fire was caused by sparks from track maintenance equipment earlier in the day Wednesday grinding on rail surfaces, causing sparks to fall onto the ties and eventually igniting Railroad service on the line resumed by mid-afternoon Thursday.
