Fort Pierre’s Edward Duffy hit 23 of 25 free throws and survived two tiebreaker rounds to become the state champion of eight and nine year old boys’ division at Saturday’s Elks State Hoop Shoot at Georgia Morse Middle School.
His 96% shooting after the regulation 25-shot round was the best of the day but was matched by Yankton’s Connor Mebius in his division and was forced into a tiebreaker. Both Duffy and Mebius hit four of five free throws in the first shoot off. Duffy outlasted his nine-year old competitor by hitting all five of his shots in the second tiebreaker, while the Yankton lodge champion made four.
Duffy will represent South Dakota at the March 10 Elks Regional Hoop Shoot in Rapid City.
Pierre’s Ryan Barry tied for the top spot in the 10-and 11-year old girls group with 18 of makes bust lost in the second tie-breaker round. Fort Pierre’s Lincoln Kienholz finished in third place in the 12-and 13- year old boys’ division, hitting 19 of 25 shots.
In total, 37 kids, all winners of local lodge contest, competed in the State Hoop Shoot Saturday in Pierre.
