Full water service has been restored to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre. Sigrid Wald, the Commutations and Public Relations Coordinator for St. Mary’s says the break happened around 1:30 Thursday morning, just outside the southwest exit of the Hospital. Full water service and pressure was returned to the building about 14 hours later just before four PM. Repair of the main was complex for Avera staff and local contractors as the break was directly below an electrical transformer. A temporary water line bypass was used to supply some water to the north building; however the smaller replacement line did not supply adequate water pressure for some services. The break caused patients in the Kidney Dialysis Unit, which requires a specific level of water pressure to provide treatment, to be transferred to Chamberlain for treatment. The KDU was the only unit affected by the issue. The cause of the break is not known. Kidney Dialysis treatments will resume at Avera St. Mary’s Friday.
