(KCCR) — Interim Hughes County Sheriff Darin Johnson is now officially Sheriff Darin Johnson. Johnson was selected to serve as Hughes County Sheriff while County Commissioners opened up an application process to fill the position until the next general election. Hughes County Manager Kevin Hipple says Johnson and a second individual applied to fill the gap left when long time Sheriff Mike Leidholt left to become Secretary of Corrections under Governor Kristi Noem. In a press release, Hughes County Commission Chairman Roger Inman says Johnson not only comes to the position with a wealth of law enforcement experience, but with experience in the Sheriff’s Office itself. Inman expects a seamless transition to the new leadership. Johnson was appointed interim Sheriff January 14th. Johnson’s appointment as Sheriff is for two years as he will have to run for election in 2020. Johnson has been a member of the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office since 1997, most recently serving as Chief Deputy.
