Johnson Says Tariffs One Of The Few Tools Available To Work Out Trade Deal

With tariffs and counter tariffs flying between the US and China, Ag producers are caught in the cross fire. South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson says there may be some good in all this…

“Well tariffs for tariff’s sake are a bad idea. Tariffs when used as a hammer to try to drive China to a final agreement could end up being good news.”

Johnson says China only moves when pushed…

“There are only so many tools the President’s got in his toolbox. When the Chinese start to renege on commitments, what can you do? You don’t want to get taken advantage of. It is difficult…every single trade team in the world from any country will tell you…that China is terrible to deal with. It is not enjoyable. It does not go easily. They are always trying to leverage the other side inappropriately. And when you have that kind of hard ball competitor, the only thing they understand is hard ball.”

Johnson says there will be more pain in the short term…

“I…have concerns about what that is going to mean for Farm Country, but we need to understand that, we have to hold China accountable, not only during these negotiations, but throughout the lifetime of this deal. Cause even once you cut a deal with China, they…it is routinely the case that they will not hold up their end. The White House wants stronger enforcement mechanisms and I think we can all understand why?

President Trump has promised another federal bail out for farmers hit by the loss of the Chinese market.
