Lawmakers Pass Budget After Long Night At State Capitol

(WNAX) — South Dakota legislators voted early Wednesday morning on budget bills to wrap up the session. SB191 is the general spending bill for fiscal year 2020. Senator John Wiik of Big Stone City, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, says there is more money included for their priority, nursing homes…

“Well again 10% inflation for nursing homes. 18.1 million dollars and total ongoing funds for nursing homes. Is that going to solve the problem entirely, no but it’s a good start and it’s a good step.”
Wiik says there are several increases…

“We have an increase of 59 million dollars in general funds. We have an increase of 63.1 million dollars in federal fund expenditure authority and an increase of 40 million dollars and other fund expenditure authority. That’s 162.4 million dollars spread out through state government at an increase of 91.3 full-time equivalent employees.”

Senator Stace Nelson of Fulton objected, concerned about a veto from the Governor…

“I guess my concern is I’m worried the governor’s going to veto this. Because this clearly goes against her campaign promise to limit government growth, so I’m worried were gonna be back here.”

That bill passed the Senate on a vote of twenty seven to two. It earlier passed in the House on a vote of fifty three to six. Both Houses are now adjourned until the final day on March 29th.
