Legislators Talking About How To Address Storm Costs

(WNAX) — Several rounds of flooding mixed with some strong storms has created major problems for a number of counties. At least fifty-eight of the state’s counties are included in at least one disaster declaration. House Majority Leader Lee Qualm of Platte says they have been talking about the tough financial situation many counties are facing…

“Leadership has had a discussion, you know about the potential ways to fix it and we know the appropriators are looking at different things; what are the options that we can have? Our counties are broke, basically it’s…with a whole heck of a lot of stuff yet to do.”
Qualm says those county roads are vital…

“And so we need to give them some tools where they can get some of this done. If, if we don’t have roads, it gets very difficult for farmers to get their crops any place. Tourists don’t like driving on no roads so, its, its, very critical that we get this figured out.”
Qualm says it is difficult to come up with a fix until they know the costs…

“Nobody really knows the dollar number yet. We’re still putting that whole thing together and until we really know a dollar number, it’s a little difficult to even talk about what the possibilities might be. Once we have a dollar number then we can look at possibilities and say Well maybe we can do this; maybe we can do this, but we really need some of that stuff first before we can make a good solid decision.”
Qualm says they have talked about using some of the roll over funds into this year’s budget, or possibly the state’s budget reserve.
