Local Teams Have Great Showing in Youth Girls Basketball Tournament

The 10th annual Pierre Youth Girls Basketball Tournament was held Saturday, January, 19th.

Nearly 200 young athletes competed on teams from Sully Buttes, Huron, Wall, Spearfish, Stanley County, Philip, Gettysburg, and Pierre.

The tournament is a fundraising event for the Pierre Lady Govs basketball program and is sponsored by First National Bank and Beck Motors.

4th Grade Division: Pierre Lady Govs 1st, Wall Lady Eagles 2nd

The Pierre Lady Govs 4th grade team went 3-0 in the tournament beating teams from Sully Buttes, Pierre, and a tough Wall Lady Eagles team in the championship.  The Lady Govs fought of the Eagles team to go on to take a 27-17 victory in the championship game.

5th Grade Division: Pierre Swish 1st, Sully Buttes Charges 2nd

The Pierre Swish 5th grade team took on the Potter County Battlers, Sully Buttes Chargers and Pierre Trailblazers to make their way through the tournament undefeated and 5th grade champions.  The championship game between the Swish and Sully Buttes Chargers went into a second overtime and was decided in sudden death when Ava Johnson hit a twelve foot jumper to seal the 20-18 win for Pierre.

6th Grade Division: Huron Tigers 1st, Wall Lady Eagles 2nd

The 6th grade division saw the Huron Tigers emerge as champions with three wins on the day over Philip, Spearfish, and Wall in the championship. After trailing most of the game, Wall made a late run but fell short as Huron held on for the 30-26 win for the title.

Tournament director Dan Lusk said, “There were many competitive games played throughout the day and it was great to see these young athletes get some quality court time right here in Pierre.”
