(KCCR)– The South Dakota Highway Patrol says one person was killed and another seriously injured Sunday night in a two-vehicle crash in Hand County. Authorities say a 1993 Chevy S-10 pickup was traveling west on U-S Highway 14 when it lost control because of an icy road surface. The S-10 slid into the eastbound lane, and collided with a 2019 Chevy Silverado. The S-10 was driven by a 24-year old male. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was thrown from the pickup. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Silverado was driven by a 26 year-old male who suffered life-threatening injuries. He was using a seatbelt and was eventually transported to a Sioux Falls hospital. The crash happened three miles west of Wessington on the Beadle/Hand County line just before midnight Sunday evening. Hand County was under a Winter Weather Advisory at the time for freezing drizzle and light glazing of ice. The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family.
