All the way back on November 30th the Oahe Capitals started their season with a 3-2 victory over the Rushmore Thunder. Friday night, in Rapid City the Thunder didn’t hold back on senior night and throttled the Capitals 6-0 for only the Capitals second loss of the season.
Midway through the first period, the Capitals and Thunder took matching minor penalties and in the span of the two minute 4-on-4 hockey, the Thunder were able to score twice and take a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. In the second period the Capitals found themselves down 5-3 on two separate occasions and the Thunder were able to take advantage and scored on both chances and added another power play goal in the second to lead 5-0 through two. The Capitals were only able to generate 22 shots on net and John Young pitched his second shutout of the season for the Thunder who trail the Capitals by just one point with the Caps having a game in-hand for second place in the league. The Sioux Falls Flyers won both games this weekend so they have extended their lead to five points now over the Capitals for first place.
The Capitals return home for the final two home games of the season as they welcome in Watertown and Aberdeen. Saturday’s game against Watertown will be at 7:00 with pregame at 6:40. You can listen on Capital City Rock and capitalcityrock.com with Jon Winkler on the call.
