Pierre Area Chamber Trying To Look Ahead After Governor’s Hunt Pulled From Pierre

(KCCR) — Pierre Area Chamber officials are reacting to the news the Governor’s Pheasant Hunt is being pulled from its longtime home of the Pierre/Fort Pierre area to southeast South Dakota and Sioux Falls. Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Director Lois Ries says they found out indirectly about the change of venue…

“People calling and Facebook and that type of thing.  We’re not on Facebook a whole lot during the day, but we try and get on there and see what’s new and who’s all on there…but yeah, kinda find out…found out Monday and then yesterday was a busy day with phone calls and that kind of thing and…yeah so it was just…it was a surprise to us and something that we didn’t see coming.”
She says they expect a significant financial loss to the area when the event moves to Sioux Falls in 2020…

“We’re figuring over 200,000 dollars probably is spent on the Governor’s Hunt when those folks come to our community and that’s probably not as much as what we really think, but we’re putting a price tag of 200,000 on it.  So that really hurts and it’s hard to recover from something like that.  So..it is…it’s a struggle for us, but we’re going to see what we can do.”
Ries says Pierre officials would have at least liked the chance to work with those who moved the Hunt…

“Sure would have liked to have been in on the discussion and we weren’t.  It was a decision that was made, you know, and I’m not sure who…the people who were that made it.  I don’t think it was just one person, I think it was several people that made the decision.  So, we just have to…kind of go along with it right now.  There’s not much choice in doing that.  But we are going to be trying; we’re going to try to be proactive.  We’ve been telling hunters not to come to our area the second weekend in October or of…for pheasant season, because we were always full and now we need to be proactive and get the word out that we want you to come to Pierre the second weekend…as good as the first weekend.”
A meeting to discuss planning beyond the Governor’s Pheasant Hunt is scheduled for next week at the Pierre Area Chamber office in Pierre. The Chamber is encouraging input from anyone with thoughts on moving forward.
