Pierre City Commission Approves Resolution Of Support For DOT Grant Application To Rebuild Bike Path

(KCCR) — The Pierre City Commission has approved a small step in a longer process to apply for a grant that would reestablish a dedicated trail link from Steamboat Park to La Framboise Island. Parks Director Tom Farnsworth says the South Dakota Department of Transportation is making available grant money in the Transportation Alternatives Program…

Farnsworth says they would try to budget for the 18 to 20-percent match in the 2022 city budget as if the grant is approved, the city would have three years to complete the project. Local support is also a part of the grant application process. Mike Mueller, chairman for the Oahe Wheelmen Cycling Club says the rebuild would make the causeway safer for everyone…

Commissioner Jim Mehlhaff says the original path was a great community asset before the 2011 flood…

The trail would also allow for an ADA accessible path to the fishing pier on the east side of the causeway. An estimated cost for the project has not be established.
