Pierre City Commission Rejects Fire Truck Bid At Fire Chief’s Request

(KCCR) — It’s back to the drawing board for the Pierre Fire Department as they look to replace a fire truck. Fire Chief Ian Paul asked the Pierre City Commission to reject the only bid the city received for the vehicle…

“That design of that Engine is very similar to the one that we had 3 years ago, Engine number 3, but when we got the bid back, the price came a little bit higher than we wanted to see for that particular style of Engine.  Back in 2017, I believe, when we took possession of Engine number 3, that style; that design was about 200-or 340-thousand.  The bid that we just got back in for almost the same style design is about 399-thousand; just underneath the 400 that the Commission allocated.”
Paul says the Truck Committee that put the bid and specs for the truck together can come up with something more affordable…

“We re-wrote the specs and made it instead of a two-door commercial chassis with a custom build on the back; we’re going to a four-door commercial chassis which is going to open it up to a world of other bidders and when you open it up to a world of bidders, it will bring that price down and so the Committee that we put together that worked on this all agree that the price was too high and we want to do the best for the community and bring that price down.”
Paul says the company that submitted the lone bid is the only company that can customize a truck the way the original design was plotted. Commissioner Blake Barringer asked if the change would make a bid difference for the firefighters who use it…

“Will that still work for your custom part that you wanted in the back part of that cab and for your controls?”  “Yeah, so the thing that we’re giving up by going back to a four-door commercial cab/chassis there is; the enclosed pump panel, so the pump operator will still be out in the elements like on our other truck, except for Engine number 3, but the thing is, there’s only one business that can really build that style of truck and so it didn’t make it very competitive and we felt that the price was just higher.  The Committee feels; that’s gonna be operation this truck; and that’s the Committee is made up of and myself.  They’re comfortable going back to a four-door chassis that they operate now.”
Paul says he hopes to have the re-spec’d bid back to the Pierre City Commission before the end of 2019. The truck is a budgeted item for 2020.
