The Pierre Governors got two early touchdowns in the state championship game and led 13-0 over the Huron Tigers. Huron stormed back and held Pierre scoreless through the end of the half and took a 14-13 lead into the locker room. Just like last year, the Govs trailed at half but it didn’t phase them. Junior quarterback, Garrett Stout led the way for this Pierre Governor team scoring on two separate 2 yard runs in the second half, earning him player of the game and rusher of the game The Govs finished off another state championship win 38-20 over the Huron Tigers and claimed back to back titles for the first time in school history. This coming off the heels of the girls soccer team claiming back to back state titles as well. One player in particular got to celebrate twice. Mackenzie Rath, the place kicker is on both the girls soccer team and football team as she booted home two extra points in the game, becoming the first female to score a point in a state championship football game in South Dakota.
The defense for this Governor team shut down the run emphatically in the game. They didn’t allow a single yard rushing for Huron. In fact, they forced Huron to negative one yard rushing in the game, a big key as Jett McGirr nearly threw for 200 yards.
. Grey Zabel won the lineman of the game award for the Govs as well.
The Govs finish the year at 10-2 and for these seniors, they leave the team with two state titles in their last two years but leave behind an impressive core group that will be back next year.
