Pierre Govs Are State Champions

The Pierre Govs football team are state champions. After defeating the Harrisburg Tigers Friday night in the Dakota Dome on the campus of the University of South Dakota 24-21.

The Tigers would get out to the early lead after a 24 yard pass to Jack Rabern, which made it 7-0. The Tigers would get the ball back after a Pierre punt and Jack Anderson would run one in from two yards out to make it 14-0. Pierre would finally answer back with a touchdown drive of their own, which was a 61 yard touchdown throw to Mike Lusk. Harrisburg would go on another long drive and punch one in from two yards out from Hunter Headlee to make it 21-7. On the kick off after the Govs gave up a touchdown Garrett Stout would return it 85 yards for the touchdown to make it 21-14. That would be the score going into the locker rooms for half time.

In the third quarter neither team could really get anything going as it wasn’t until the fourth quarter when Peyton Zabel found Lusk for another touchdown from 24 yards out to tie it 21-21. After Pierre caused another turnover the Govs would drive down the field and Casey Williams would hit the game winning field goal.

Harrisburg had a good game offensively they had 373 yards as Pierre had a total of 215 total yards. Zabel had a good day through the air he was 13 of 22 for 196 yards and two touchdowns. The Pierre defense stepped up in a big way once again as they forced four turnovers and the game winning strip sack.

The outstanding lineman went to Eric Coleman and the outstanding back went Garrett Stout. Lusk was named the Joe Robbie MVP award.

The Govs football team will have a welcome home tonight at TF Riggs starting at 6:30 pm. All are welcomed to attend.
