Pierre Man Honored with Award During Halftime of Class 11AA State Title Game

During halftime of the Class 11AA State Title Game on Friday between Pierre and Brookings, a Pierre man will be receiving an award; Mark Smith, for the Steve Withorne Memorial Award. It is presented in recognition of an athletic official’s outstanding contributions and long-time dedication to promoting the development of officials.

Smith, who is now retired, worked with the attorney general from 1979 to around 1992 and then became the state’s attorney in Hughes County from 1993 to 2004. He then became of a judge for the sixth circuit from 2004 to 2011.

Smith was a line judge for 17 years before doing anything else as an official and along with the award, Smith is also receiving the 40 year award which he was very humble about…

Smith will receive the award at halftime of the Pierre and Brookings game at halftime on Friday. Pierre and Brookings will play at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings, at 12:00.
