Pierre Police Make Arrest In July Shooting

(KCCR) — An arrest has been made in connection to a July shooting incident that sent a Pierre man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Pierre Police Captain Bryan Walz says a Hughes County grand jury has indicted 24 year-old Derek At The Straight with Attempted First Degree Murder, Commission of a Felony While Armed and four counts of Aggravated Assault. On July 9th police were called to the 400 block of West Prospect Avenue around nine pm, after a caller reported that a shooting had taken place. The caller told police a 30 year-old male had been shot and was driven to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital. The victim was eventually transported to Sioux Falls for further treatment of his wounds. Investigators determined the victim was outside of the residence when the shooting happened. The condition of the victim has not been released. At the Straight is being held on a 50-thousand dollar bond at the Hughes County Jail.
