Pierre School Board Hears Details On Possible Access Control And Security Upgrades At Riggs High School

(KCCR) — The Pierre School District is giving significant consideration to the installation of enhanced security measures at T-F Riggs High School. Technology Director Bryan Linn says the local contractor who installed the current system for access control at Riggs no longer services the system…

“They no longer install the solution; they don’t really have a way to maintain it to help us.  They can order in parts and try to keep it going for us, but its kind of where we are at… So we’ve been looking; talking about it.  The solution itself that we currently have is kind of a canned-off-the-shelf type solution.  It’s not really ah…doesn’t have the ability to integrate with other systems, like cameras, camera systems, panic button systems that we now have installed so it’s pretty much there to manage essentially one building.”

Linn says officials have been working on a plan to streamline access control district wide…

“The plan was to replace all existing software, door controls, card readers on 51 doors in five buildings.  Remove all of the RDA system at Riggs, the middle school, Buchanan, Jefferson as well as the Paxton system at Kennedy.”
As for Riggs, officials want to restrict access to the building to the main entrance. Superintendent Dr. Kelly Glodt says students would have to get used to the change…

“There’s not question that it would be a big change for students.  And I’m not saying every student’s gonna necessarily enjoy the change.  They might kind of like the freedom of going in and out of 30 some plus doors, but if we’re serious about controlling that access; I think, and we’ve talked about this many times, the students are going to be the ones that help us make that building secure.  Almost every school…big incident that’s ever been foiled was because of other students telling some authority that something bad was going to happen.”
The upgrades if approved may include in the future the credentialing of students with IDs that would give students access to the buildings. The security proposal also includes a re-design of the Riggs main entrance. Linn didn’t present any projected costs for any security upgrades but is expected to talk about the possible costs during a District budget workshop scheduled for Tuesday night at the Pierre School District Administration building which will start at 5:15 pm.
