Pierre School District Security Upgrades To Riggs High School Access Nearly Finished

(KCCR) — While the Pierre School Board met Monday night the Big Green Welcome was also being held at T-F High School. Superintendent Dr. Kelly Glodt says students at Riggs will be working with one significant change to the building itself. The access to Riggs is being restricted for security reasons…

“As you know, safety and security of all of our buildings is a high priority for the School Board. I want to thank all of the administrators; a number of the administrators and the School Board for the many hours and the extra special meetings and different things that were necessary in order to get that into place.  We would love to have everything completely in place before the first day of school.  Some of the construction of that will not be fully completed by then, but will be out of the way for students and it’s not going to be an issue with that.”
Glodt says the security at Riggs will be equal to that of Georgia Morse Middle School and all of the Elementary schools in the District…

“They’ll have a buzz-in system and the only access into the building during the school hours will be through the front entrance after getting buzzed in by an individual there at the front door so. Students at Riggs will certainly have a change this year.  Obviously every door you can still get out in case there’s an emergency.  They’re never locked, but you can’t get in those doors and students will also be limited to that front door during school hours so it won’t be able to go out a lot of the other exits if they’ve been used to.”
In addition to the security upgrades Glodt says it’s up to staff and more so students to be watchful around them…

“In all the different trainings we’ve been to around the country and around the state, any bad situations that could have happened in a school; the great majority of those that don’t happen, didn’t happen because a student spoke up and we have to absolutely have to have that happen. Not just at the high school, but all of our buildings.  If any student here hears of something that would be dangerous or inappropriate they certainly need to let the authorities know as soon as possible and I think they certainly will do that.”
An all-staff back to school in-service will take place Friday at eight am. Classes start August 21st for all three elementary schools and the Middle School. High School grades begin class on August 19th.
