Pierre Soccer Seasons Come to an End in the First Round

Both Pierre Governor Soccer teams traveled to Sioux Falls on Tuesday in the first round of the playoffs looking for a small and large upset according to their seeds. However, both home teams and higher seeds picked up wins as the girls and boys season came to an end.

The girls began play against O’Gorman and played to a 0-0 halftime stalemate while the Govs had the better of the possession. In the first minute of the second half, Avery Davis got free in front of the net, dribbled in close, stayed patient right to the end and found the back of the net in an easy goal to give the Governors a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later though, Andie Allison would attempt to clear the ball away from inside Pierre’s goal box and picked up a foul giving O’Gorman a free kick and scoring to make it 1-1. Into the 59th minute, Ava Manning would receive a pass in front of the net and find the target and score to give O’Gorman a 2-1 lead and they would cling to it and pick up the 2-1 win.

In the boys match, the scoreboard showed a 3-0 win for Roosevelt but the action was much tighter than what the box score showed. Roosevelt did outshoot the Govs 45-2 unofficially in the match with 15 shots on target, but Pierre stayed in the match through the first 65 minutes. With a 1-0 deficit, Cam Ahartz lined up for a goal kick, booted it towards midfield and was played the Rough Riders. Henry Juarez shot one from over 40 yards out and with the wind, sailed over Ahartz head who had no play but to hope it went long. Unfortunately the ball sunk under the crossbar and in for the second goal of the night and the Rough Riders would take on one more in the final three minutes of the match.
