Pierre Tennis in the Thick of Things after Day 1

The Pierre Tennis team had a good showing in the first day of the 2019 Class A State Tournament. Three of the six singles competitors have advanced to Day 2 while one doubles competitors are in the championship semifinals this morning.

In flight three, Jocelyn Corrales picked up a first round victory over the 10 seed Portia Bird from Lennox to advance to the championship quarterfinals. Corrales won the first set over the number two seed in Oliver Huber from Mitchell but couldn’t pick up the win and fell into the consolation side of the bracket. In her last match of the day, Corrales knocked off Lauren Strand and is in the consolation semifinals for today.

In flight five, Caitlin Ott was upset in the first round to Rapid City Christian’s Hannah Beckloff but came back to upset the number five seed Evelyn Graham from Madison to advance to the consolation semifinals and will face AnnaClaire Rubish from Huron for a chance to make it to the fifth place match.

In flight six, Gracie Zeeb, the five seed lost to the number four seed Jemini Cantalope from Aberdeen in straight sets before picking up the win over the six seed Bella Maxwell from Madison and is in the consolation semifinals to begin play in the second day.

In the second doubles flight, Kara Weiss and Sydney Tedrow picked up a first round win in the 7-10 matchup over the team from Madison before falling to the number two seed team in Aberdeen in the second round. However, the seven seed of Weiss and Tedrow would knock off the number nine seed from Spearfish in a 10-0 sweep to put themselves in the consolation semifinals today.

Then there’s flight three doubles competition. The team of Jocelyn Corrales and Caitlin Ott as the number six seed picked up a two set win in the first round over Vermillion’s team, then had a major upset over the three seed Madison to put them in the championship semifinals. The team will face Yankton, the seven seed who upset the number two seed from Aberdeen. The winner will play in the championship, the team that loses will still play in the third place match.

Pierre is in seventh place as a team through the first day and will look to increase their score with a couple of big wins.
