PIERRE — A Pierre T-F Riggs senior graduating with the Class of ’21 has been named one of only 4500 candidates for inclusion in the 2021 U-S Presidential Scholars Program. Devin Hemmelman was selected from some three-point-six million students across the nation expected to graduate from a U-S high school this year. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. A panel of educators will review candidate submissions and select approximately 600 semifinalists in early April. The Commission on Presidential Scholars will select finalists and the U-S Department of Education will announced Scholars in May. The U-S Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by an Executive Order from President Lyndon B. Johnson to recognize distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in many areas.
