Riverfront Broadcasting News Wins 5 Eric Sevareid Award This Weekend

(KCCR) — Riverfront Broadcasting News has again been recognized by the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association for excellence in broadcast journalism with five prestigious Eric Sevareid awards. KCCR picked up Sevarieds in the categories of Social Media, General Reporting, Series and Spot News. First Place was earned in Social Media for use of Facebook Live during coverage of severe weather and the KCCR Storm Tracker…

KCCR nearly swept the General Reporting category with two of three possible Sevareid wins. An Award of Merit was earned for a story about the Sunset Paddleboat’s fight to get a docking station in Pierre. A story with former Pierre Area Chamber President Mary Carter talking her day with Barbara Bush during a presidential campaign visit to Pierre by her husband George H-W Bush…

“She was such a nice person I said I felt like I was showing my mother’s best friend around town.  I mean she just immediately made you feel like she was a friend and talked about her kids and her grandkids and..and it was just a wonderful afternoon with her.”
The reporting of Pierre’s issue with air service toward the end of 2018 netted a First Place Sevareid in the Series or continuing story category and on-the-spot reporting of three overturned vehicles on I-90 near Murdo because of severe thunderstorms brought home a First Place Sevareid in the Spot News category….

“We have, ah KCCR News Director Zach Nelson, Zach what are you seeing, what’s the latest.”  “Well good evening DT.  I am west of Murdo right now and ah near the Okaton area.  We’re at, just south of mile marker 181 on Interstate 90 and if you go to the Today’s KCCR Facebook stream, you will see an 18-wheeler that is on its passenger side, on its right side.”
TV and radio stations and student journalists in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska compete for awards in four divisions; student, small, medium and large market. Each category awards three plaques, a first place and two awards of merit. The Eric Sevareid Awards were presented at the end of the annual Midwest Journalism Conference held Saturday night in Bloomington, Minnesota.
