GEORGE TOWN, Grand Caymans — South Dakota State found itself in a battle Tuesday at the Cayman Islands Classic and came out victorious, taking down Iowa 80-72 at John Gray Gymnasium.

The Jackrabbits (4-2) had four players in double figures, led by David Jenkins Jr.’s 23 points behind three 3-pointers and six free throws, including three in the final minute to close out a 19-point second half. Tevin King added 16 with seven rebounds and three assists, while Reed Tellinghuisen (15 points) and Mike Daum (10 points) achieved double digits. Ian Theisen pulled down a team-best nine rebounds, playing 20 minutes with five points and a 3-pointer, while Daum paced the squad with four assists.

For Iowa, Isaiah Moss was one of four Hawkeyes to reach double figures, finishing with 18 points. A back-and-forth game saw nine lead changes and 10 ties, with the largest leads for both teams coming in the opening two minutes (Iowa by six) and the final 42 seconds (SDSU by nine).

Between the two extremes, the teams traded buckets in a fast-paced affair that saw State shoot 44.3 percent and Iowa 50.9 percent from the field. The Jacks sank 10 3-pointers in the contest and made 16 of their 19 free throw attempts. Iowa hit eight 3-pointers but missed seven of its 15 free throw chances.

Down six early, SDSU used 3-pointers from Tellinghuisen and Daum to tie it before Iowa took back control and went up five (17-12) near the under-12 media. From there, the Jackrabbits ran off seven straight to take their first lead of the day (21-17), only to have the Hawkeyes respond and match the Jacks at 23 with six minutes to go in the half.

Over the next two minutes, South Dakota State put together another 7-0 run burst to take a 30-23 lead before the Hawkeyes closed the gap to one (34-33) at 1:02. Daum closed the first-half scoring with a highlight-reel slam, coming up with a steal on the defensive end and sprinting down the court, finishing with a dunk just before the buzzer to give State a 36-33 halftime lead.

Iowa opened the final frame with a 7-2 rally to take a 40-38 lead at 17:55 and the teams swapped scores over the next six minutes before a jumper from Jenkins put SDSU in the lead for good, 54-52, at 11:57. The Jackrabbits strung together one more 7-0 spurt to go up 63-55 just outside of the eight-minute media to force an Iowa timeout, and though the Hawkeyes cut it to one (63-62) at 5:48, King and Jenkins combined to score the next 13 Jackrabbit points and put the game on ice.

South Dakota State will play the winner of the UAB/Buffalo matchup Wednesday in its final game of the Cayman Islands Classic. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. ET / 1:30 p.m. CT from John Gray Gymnasium.
