State Corrections Department Says Inmate From Mellette County Dies After Long Illness

(KCCR) — The South Dakota Department of Corrections says an inmate, convicted to prison time for a murder in Mellette County has died. Corrections officials say 44 year old Lorenzo Benallie died following an extended illness. It is a death not related to Covid-19. Officials say Benallie was in a comfort care setting at the Jameson Annex at the State Penitentiary. That setting allows terminally ill inmates to receive palliative care with the corrections environment while providing respect and dignity during the end-of-life experience. Benallie was serving a life sentence after being convicted on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Joe Moran in White River in April of 1996.
