After getting defeated 46-29 on their home court two weeks ago by Ipswich, the Sully Buttes Charger girls came out swinging, and nearly pulled off a victory over the Tigers on their home court—the end result was a 42-41 Ipswich victory Thursday night.
The Chargers were tied at 15 after one quarter, and trailed 21-17 at the half, but took the lead after three by the score of 31-28. After a back and forth final quarter, the Chargers took the lead with ten seconds left at 41-39 lead, only to have the Tigers drive the length of the court, hit a layup, get fouled, and sink the game winner with 2.8 seconds left. The final Charger inbounds was intercepted—game over.
Both teams were successful when giving the opportunity at the charity stripe. The Tigers were 16 of 22 from the free throw line, while Sully Buttes was perfect—at two free throws taken—two shots made—and those were in the first quarter.
Lauren Wittler was leading scorer for the Chargers, finishing with 16 points, while Abigail Grabowska scored 15 points for the 17-3 Tigers. Sully Buttes’ season ends with a 12-9 mark.
In the other Region 2B matchup, Faulkton defeated second seeded Herreid Selby Area by the final of 53-27. Both the Tigers and Trojans will advance to the SoDak 16 next Thursday at a to be determined site.
