Despite a rocky start by Sully Buttes, the Chargers got it in gear and rolled to a 48 14 victory over Faulkton Area Friday night in Onida. The Chargers will go to the Dakotadome for the State Championship for the second consecutive year, and will face Colome.
The Chargers fumbled on the first punt reception, and threw three interceptions during the game. But, when they needed to, the Charger offense found success on the ground, compliments of quarterback Nick Wittler, and running backs Morris Hofer, and Mackenzie Weinheimer, who all rushed for touchdowns. And, Wittler also found receivers downfield in the passing game, hooking up for three touchdown passes to Hofer, Grant Johnson, and Sebastian Frost. The Chargers outgained the Trojans 514 yards total offense, to Faulkton Areas’ 215 yardage total.
Last year Sully Buttes faced eventual state champ Colman Egan, and lost in that game by a final of 42-28. The Chargers and Cowboys are the only number one vs. number two ranked teams left in the state championship matchups. Colome averaged 61.2 points per game in their eleven victories—while Sully Buttes—also at 11-0—averaged 43.8 points per game.
