In a matchup against two Class B teams with records of 15-3-(Sully Buttes), and 13-4-(Aberdeen Christian), overtime was needed to decide the winner. And in the end the Chargers fought back to tie it up late, after falling behind midway through the fourth quarter, and score a 59-54 overtime victory over the Knights at the Aberdeen Civic Arena Monday afternoon.
Led by junior Nick Wittler, who finished with 34 points, the Chargers scrapped against a tall and talented Aberdeen Christian squad on the Knights home court. Wittler had six three point shots during the contest, but his trey with 24 seconds left tied the score at 44-44, and the Chargers defense clamped down on Aberdeen Christian to force the extra stanza. Going into overtime Sebastian Frost hit a big three point shot in the first 35 seconds, and the Chargers were six of six from the free throw line in OT. Cam Ogle was the only other Sully Buttes player who ended in double figures, scoring eleven points.
For Aberdeen Christian, six foot five senior Jackson Becker ended the afternoon with 22 points, while Andrew Rohrbach added 14 points before fouling out late in the game.
The Chargers are now 16-3 on the season, and have only one scheduled game left—a Friday game against Eureka Bowdle. At this writing the possibility of that matchup may be in doubt, for lack of available players on the Patriots roster. The Knights’ record slips to 13-5, and face Britton/Hecla Tuesday night.
