The Sully Buttes Chargers girls and boys basketball teams used strong second quarters to build a lead, and both teams came away with victories over Miller Thursday night in Onida.
The Charger girls used passing and pressure defense to stifle the Lady Rustlers with a 60-48 win. Lauren Wittler led the way in scoring with strong low post play, leading the way in scoring with 23 points, and the Chargers had to play most of the third quarter without leading scorer Rachel Guthmiller, who sat with four fouls. Guthmiller still finished with 16 points. Marinda Archer came up with eleven points, while Kendra Kleven ended the night with ten. The Lady Rustlers were led in scoring by Vonnagail Schlecter, who had 14, with Kadye Fernholz adding thirteen points. The Charger girls are now at 7-0 on the season, and will head to the Hanson Classic in Mitchell at the Corn Palace Saturday, and take on the host team, the Hanson Beaverettes. The Lady Rustlers are now 5-3 on the year.
The Charger boys trailed 21-15 after the first quarter, but stiffened up defensively in the second, and outscored the Rustlers 13-3 in the second to take a 28-24 lead, on the way to a 60-50 victory. The Charger boys’ Lincoln Jordre finished up with 23 points, while Jacob Howard added nine points. The Rustlers’ Steven Fernholz led the way in scoring with a total of 24 points, while Caleb DeBoer added twelve. Sully Buttes boys’ record now is 6-1, and will be in a girls boys doubleheader next Tuesday at Timber Lake. The Miller Rustlers record drops to 7-2.
