Unique Officiant Swears In City Commissioners

This week, three Pierre City Commissioners were sworn into office. Jamie Huizenga and Jim Mehlhaff were elected to three year terms and Vona Johnson was unopposed after being appointed to fill the opening left when Steve Harding moved chairs from Commissioner to Mayor. Board members at various levels of government are generally sworn in by a Business Manager or Finance Officer, but  Huizenga, Mehlhaff and Johnson were sworn in Tuesday a judge and not just any judge…

South Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson agreed to conduct the swearing –in ceremony. Gilbertson told the full Commission that some of his vast years of experience included work on the municipal level…

Gilbertson joked as he left the Pierre City Commission chambers that the swearing in was one of the few things he does where people are smiling before and after he conducts his duties.
