Viaduct Claims First Semi Of 2018

The South Pierre Street Viaduct has its first victim of the New Year.  Just after midnight Friday morning Pierre police responded to a report that a loaded livestock trailer became lodged under the railroad crossing.  Captain Jason Jones of the Pierre Police Department says the semi was southbound on US Highway 14/83 through the middle of Pierre when struck the elevated rail crossing.  Substantial damage occurred to the top of the trailer.  A second bull rack was brought to the scene to off load the trailer’s bovine cargo.  A heavy wrecker service was brought in to remove the trailer from the bridge.  Southbound traffic on Euclid/Pierre Street was shut down so the livestock could be transferred and semi removed from the scene.  No livestock were injured.  The number of head on board the trailer is not known.  The driver of the semi has been identified as 22 year old Marshall Swanson of Hill City.  The trailer is registered to Ted Thompson Livestock of Whitewood. The scene was cleared and opened to traffic just before three AM.  No damage estimates are available and the accident is still under investigation.
