The South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Department plans on stocking rainbow trout below the Oahe Dam before the end of March. Weather permitting, the trout will be added to the Missouri River downstream of the dam on March 27th at the Oahe Marina. A team from the Cleghorn Springs State Fish Hatchery near Rapid City will stock the trout, which will run from 10 to 12 inches long. This will be the last stocking of rainbow trout downstream of the Oahe dam for two years. The reason for the hiatus in 2019 and 2020 is to free hatchery production space and to allow biologists to explore other cold-water stocking opportunities in the Lake. Rainbow trout will be stocked in the Mickelson Pond on the north side of Pierre each fall to provide a trout fishing opportunity in the area. Shoreline access and boat launches below the Oahe Dam will provide opportunities for both boat and shore anglers.
